Big Brother Rome

Rome got to meet his baby brother for the first time yesterday afternoon and he seems very excited to be a big brother. Today I was taking him to the the hospital again and made a stop at MacHeadQuarters to get my laptop looked at. Well, they have a neat aquarium at the store with a “Nemo” fish and Rome loves watching all the fish swim around. We were going to wait around for my laptop to get done, but Rome said “lets go see Mommy and Baby Jack!” So, the point of this story is that Rome was more excited to see his baby brother rather than look at the Nemo fish so that’s pretty good.

In all my haste to get updates & photos up yesterday, I never really gave an account of Jack’s arrival into the world…

Jack’s due date was actually April 5th so we were a little surprised when Kris went to her regularly scheduled appointment Monday (March 17th) morning and found out she was already dilated to 3cm and the nurse said she’d be surprised if she made it until her appointment next week. Well, I get home from class at 3:30pm and Kris is having regular (but mild) contractions every 3-5 minutes. She had tested positive for Group B Strep (which can be harmful for the baby). Kris knew she would needed to be given antibiotics before he was born so she called the hospital and they said come on in. We got to the triage department, spent about an hour there with no real progress. She did dilate another centimeter so they checked her in and we waited…and waited…and waited. After a pretty much sleepless night for all, Kris was finally at about 5 cm in the morning so they started Pitossin to help increase her contractions. Around 10:30 or 11 they broke her water and that’s when things really started moving along. Within 30 minutes her contracts got much more intense so she was given and epidural at about 11:30. 15 minutes later she started pushing and at 12:17pm Jack was born – a mere 17 hours after we arrived at the hospital (though I don’t think Kris was technically “in labor” that whole time). Meanwhile, Rome’s Godparents Eric & Jen Estes were taking care of Rome, which we are very thankful for. He had a good time playing with his “God-brother” Ben and wasn’t so happy to come home with daddy because he was in the middle of playing Play-Dough when I picked him up in the afternoon. All in all things went very smoothly and aside from the 24 hours of rain we had, it was a wonderful day! Again, thanks be to our Heavenly Father for taking care of all of us during this time and thanks again to everyone for all of your kind words and prayers over the last few days!
